Toshiba Satellites shipped with Windows Vista or Windows 7 include a hidden partition on the hard drive that contains software used to format the drive or restore the operating system to its original state. If the computer no longer boots to the OS, or if you intend to sell the computer but want to keep your business files out of the hands of the next owner, you can reformat the drive using Toshiba HDD Recovery or Toshiba Recovery Wizard. Which software your computer includes varies depending on the model of the laptop. Reformatting the drive will remove all data from it, so back up any critical files before proceeding.

1.

Turn on or restart the Satellite. Press 'F8' wen the Toshiba logo screen appears to go to Advanced Boot Options.

2.

Press 'Ctrl-Alt-Del' to restart the laptop if the Satellite boots to Windows before accessing the boot menu. Repeat Step 1.

3.

Select 'Repair Your Computer' and then press 'Enter' to load System Recovery Options.

4.

Choose your keyboard layout from the drop-down menu and then click 'Next.'

5.

Drivers & Software Support

Enter the administrative credentials for your Windows account and then click 'OK.'

Choose 'TOSHIBA HDD Recovery' from the options. Click 'Next.' Click 'Next' again.

7.

Confirm your AC adapter is connected to the Toshiba Satellite. Click 'Yes' to reformat the hard drive.

8.

Click 'Restart' when the message 'The Recovery Process Has Finished' appears on-screen.

Power on or restart the Satellite and press 'F8' when the Toshiba logo appears.

Press 'Ctrl-Alt-Del' to restart the computer if Windows loads before entering Advanced Boot Options. Start over from Step 1.

Choose your keyboard layout from the drop-down menu and then click 'Next.' Enter your administrative password and then click 'OK.'

Click 'TOSHIBA Recovery Wizard.' Connect the AC adapter to the laptop and click 'OK.'

5.

Click 'Recovery of Factory Default Software' to restore the hard drive to its original state; click 'Erase the Hard Disk' to wipe all data from the drive without reinstalling Windows.

6.

Select 'Recover to Out-of-Box-State,' 'Recover Without Changing the Hard Drive Partitions' or 'Recover to a Custom Size Partition,' if you chose to recover to factory conditions. The first option will remove all data from the entire hard drive, the second option will remove all data from the first partition and the third option will remove all data from the drive and reinstall Windows to a partition of a specific size.

7.

Select 'Delete All Data and Partitions From the Hard Disk' or 'Delete All Partitions and Overwrite All Sectors on the Hard Disk' if you choose to wipe the drive. Select the second option if the drive contains bad sectors.

8.

Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the process. Click 'Finish' when the format completes to power off the laptop.
